Gibson A 1 Mandolinvintage 1939 excellent
~ VINTAGE BANJOLIN MANDOLIN/BANJO IN CASE MUSICAL INSTRUMENT ~
Measures approx 62 cm long x 28 cm wide x 5.8 cm thick
Here we have a most interesting old
Stringed musical instrument
I consider myself rather lucky to have found this in a regional Op Shop!!
I have never seen one of these in my life
Didn't know quite what it was
Though an old packet of Mandolin strings
Gave me a big hint!
It looks like a height challenged banjo
In a blue leather case
But it seems nothing is as it appears, or so it would appear! Ha ha!
Now I am no authority on such things
I was not taught music but I play guitar rather badly (self taught)
So I have some very limited musical knowledge (and talent, some rude people may say!)
But I think it is in working condition
Plucking across the 8 strings
Each pair seem to be in tune with each other
It would appear from my limited knowledge that it has been tuned
The Op Shop people knew nothing about it and
Had only just placed it on the counter when I came along!
I Googled it and
I made phone contact with a couple of music experts
Beechworth is blessed with it's share of those in the arts
I could paint a lovely picture of this and indeed I'm feeling a tad inspired to do so!
There is an instrument maker and repairer here
He said this was not in his line of instruments
However he said it is well known in the circles that
In the old days
A famous name would be attached to an instrument to help in the sale!!
This practice is strictly not allowed now,
This one has "Stradivarius Special" on it
I thought I had a real Stradivarius, doh!
I fell for it!
I wouldn't remove this transfer as it may cause damage
It's all part of the show and no trick selling on my part
Please be clear that I am not claiming this to be a Stradivarius
I am unable to detect an actual maker on it
I am just honestly telling you what I see
I see an old transfer with "Stradivarius Special" on the end!
Can't even remember what that tuning thingy bit on the end is called! LOL!
But I show this transfer in my photos
I would reckon it would be from around the early 1900s
There are clues
Some old items seem to tell their own tail
There must be some great old stories that involve this one!
I reckon it was somebodies darling once
I reckon they have kept it in it's box in pretty good order
All these years because they loved it
It was their joy
He or she has probably died
And this old "lovely" has ended up in the unwanted pile ;(
The musician I know backs what the other guy says
He may come and view it and I will add any further info gathered
If someone has some info on this item
Please message me and I will put it in the Q & A section for others to read
It is basically timber of some sort
Something a bit special I guess because
It looks beautiful with a luminous lovely rippled effect
There are other timbers involved and
Materials including what looks to me like chrome
The finish/lacquer on the timber is maybe a bit dry
I guess with age and if you look closely you can see crazing
The back of the round part is convex and
There are scratches that are not deep
Consistent with rubbing against buttons, belt buckles? braces
As it was joyfully played and made to tell its lovely stories
The 8 cream coloured tuning keys look like Bakelite
One of the tuning key mechanisms has been broken and replaced
This is the only bit of actual damage there has been that I can see
Looks like the original piece is in the little bag of old strings
The repair job is very good but
If the old owner so diligently kept the original piece
I guess they hope some day to put it back
The pics are more explanatory so
Please look at the pics and I can email you more if need be
I have done nothing towards cleaning this instrument up, or it's case
So both are a bit dusty and grubby
The case looks like navy blue leather
But I think it is that early fake leather
It appears to have the original paper lining
Made to look like flat weaving
There is the odd small tear inside but it's all held up to the years very well
The three closures and the handle show rust
It all shows wear
But rather than tear, I'd say care
It would be sad to find something like this unused
This certainly has been
It's old but it still looks great
Awaiting a new home
