Vintage Kalamazoo Gibson Mandolin pre 1938
This auction is for an original and very rare 1917 The Gibson F4
mandolin (serial number 37716) with what we think is its original case. It
was owned by my father who was a fine player in his time and
also had a musical instruments shop in the 1940s and 1950s so he had the
opportunity to find quality instruments. I believe he aquired it about 1948 but
I do not know its history before that.
The mandolin is in mint condition for its age. It was played by my
father in a very special mandolin orchestra here in Iceland in the '50s and
also in a mandolin and guitar trio. As it has not been played for almost 40 years we thought it was time to introduce it to musicians or collectors of
The mandolin has a natural finish and an oval shaped soundhole. It
has the original tortoise shell pickguard. It has all original hardware and has
no sign of being repaired or refurbished (we know that no repairs have been
done after my father bought it). As we are not specialists in the field we
don't know if the strapholder bolts are a later addition to the instrument or
original (see photos). The tuners are in mint condition and are all straight.
There are a few minor grazes commensurate with age (see pictures).
The mandolin comes with a hard shell case. The case appears to be
the original Gibson case and has purple velvet lining and a "The
Gibson" blanket to cover the instrument. The case does have wears and
tears (see pictures) but is in overall ok. condition.
The mandolin has a powerful tone and a great sound and would be a
considerable addition to any collector or mandolin enthusiast.
